The Belgian Biodiversity Platform is excited to organize the second Conservation Research Matters conference, taking place on December 21, 2023. This new edition will provide a unique opportunity to reflect on the updated conservation research agenda.

The conference aims at bringing together relevant actors in the field of conservation research and policy. Join us for a day of insightful keynote presentations and critical discussions centered on conservation research priorities and evidence-based policies in Belgium.

  • Time: 09:30 - 16:00
  • Location: Université Libre de Bruxelles Campus du Solbosch, Bâtiment S, Salle Dupréel - Avenue Jeanne 44, 1050 Brussels

We’ll kick off in the morning with the presentation of the main challenges as seen from the European level with Frank Vassen, Desk officer at the European Commission for the Birds and Habitats directives, and Gilles Doignon, Team leader Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions at the DG Research & Innovation of the European Commission.

Following that, we will shift our focus to the Belgian context, where representatives from Natuurpunt and Natagora will share their perspectives as NGOs operating at the regional level.

We will then present the updated characterisation of biodiversity research activities in Belgium and the data and knowledge needs identified by regional public authorities in a recent survey.

The afternoon session promises to be more interactive as we will facilitate discussions separately conducted for each region. These three parallel sessions will revolve around knowledge and data needs for evidence-based biodiversity policies in Belgium.

Registration deadline:  17th of November
